Sound Is A Reaction

Physical Modeling

Through the years, the term "Physical Modeling" has been used to describe instruments or effects that used many different techniques. For that reason, the term itself became too broad.

The expression "Physical Modeling" actually covers modal synthesis and reactive synthesis.

Modal synthesis which is a variation of additive synthesis is output oriented, while reactive synthesis is process oriented.

To make it simple, Modal synthesis would simulate a symetrically clipped sine by adding odd harmonics to get a similar result.

Reactive Synthesis will simulate a clipped sine by making a sine pass through a clipper.

This example demonstrates that reactive synthesis does not always mean more computation. It depends on the orginal device logic.

One instrument, One model.

You will not obtain piano sounds with a Wurlitzer® engine, and you won't even obtain Rhodes® sounds with it as each instrument has its own process, designed for one precise purpose only.

Each model has been thouroughly thought out to output the very same sound, provide the same dynamic response and timbre modulation as the original instrument it emulates.

Nothing was assumed or based on theories, everything was rethought from scratch, adjusted, fixed, rebuilt again and again piece by piece until the result was impossible to distinguish from a real sound, be it by listenning to it or scanning it with sound analysis tools.

This approach results in instruments that we hope feel lively, play smoothly and give a real world warmth anytime you hit a key.
